One of the brightest Belgian talents when it comes to stage races and hilly one-day events, Laurens caught everyone’s attention three years ago in some of the most prestigious races of the U23 calendar, like the Flèche Ardennaise, Tour de l’Avenir, Tour Alsace or Giro della Valle d’Aosta, where he also won a stage and the points classification.
In the past season, his second with Quick-Step Floors, Laurens got to make his Grand Tour debut at the Giro d’Italia – where he helped the team win five stages, featured in several breaks and notched up a maiden top 10 on a stage – and came close to victory on two separate occasions, at the Tour of Oman and Ster ZLM Toer.
Unfortunately, he had to draw the curtain over his season after a crash at Il Lombardia, but despite the crash and subsequent lengthy recovery, De Plus looks with renewed optimism to 2018, when he hopes not only to make a full recovery after that injury, but also to land his first pro win.
